Proof of exemption from prescription charges

We’re making changes to our prescription prepayment and maternity exemption certificates.

From 25 February 2019 paper certificates will replace plastic cards for prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) and maternity exemption certificates.

The changes follow the successful introduction of paper NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificates and bring savings for the NHS to put back into patient care.

The paper certificate can be used in the same way as the plastic card. Show it to the pharmacist to prove your exemption from NHS prescription charges.

To create further savings, we’re trialling digital certificates where you can receive your certificate by email.

You can get a digital maternity exemption certificate if your midwife, doctor or health visitor is taking part in the pilot.

To get a digital PPC, provide your email address when applying:

Plastic, paper and digital certificates will all be accepted as proof of exemption as long as your certificate is valid when you collect your prescriptions.
