Death Benefits payable

The death benefits that are payable are based on a percentage of the deceased’s pensionable pay. The percentages are shown in the table below.

Dependants

Amount of average pay to be provided following death

Surviving partner only

45%

Each of the first four children

10% if there is a surviving parent or
20% if there is no surviving parent

Each dependant incapacitated relative(i.e. a child who has reached age 17 and who, regardless of age, is unable to earn a living due to permanent ill health or mental or physical infirmity)

20% if there is a surviving parent or
45% if there is no surviving parent

One dependant parent

20% if there is a surviving partner or
45% if there is no surviving partner

The total amount of allowances cannot be more than 100% of the deceased's NHS pay. If more information is required, contact the Injury Benefits Scheme administrator at NHS Business Services Authority.
