If an NHS employee dies as a result of an injury sustained or disease contracted on or before 30 March 2013 which is wholly or mainly attributable to their NHS duties or if, later in life, their death is substantially hastened by an injury or disease sustained at work before 30 March 2013, their surviving partner and dependants may qualify for death benefits from the Injury Benefit Scheme.
The surviving partner must have been married to or in a civil partnership with the deceased both at the time NHS employment ended and at the time of death.
