Dental statistics – England
2019/20 to 2023/24 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 5 November 2024
We’ve identified an error with the underlying data used to create the dental workforce tables in the initial release. The workforce supporting tables have now been corrected. We have changed how we source this data to prevent this issue occurring again.
In addition, data released on the day of publication included Welsh performers. The new tables have been limited to performers on English NHS dental contracts only.
Workforce data on joiners and leavers at a sub-national level was omitted from the initial release due to data quality concerns which have now been resolved. These tables have been created from the new data source and are now included in the workforce Excel summary tables and the workforce CSV (comma separated values) files.
The workforce tables have been created using a different methodology to previous releases of this publication produced by NHS Digital. Data from the NHS Digital releases should not be directly compared to data from the new NHS BSA releases.
A time series of data has been produced in the new release to allow for comparisons over time. This is a 5-year time series for most workforce data. Data on joiners and leavers has been limited to the past 4 years as the underlying data required to calculate numbers for 2019/20 was unavailable due to data retention policies.
Performers are assigned to an NHS region or ICB based on the location of the commissioner of the dental contract. Performers are assigned to a SICBL based on the primary correspondence address they have been recorded against.
ICB level data has been added to reflect how NHS dental contracts are commissioned. SICBL data has now been split into separate tables from region and ICB data, as the primary correspondence address may be in a different area to where the dental contract is for.
The key findings and narrative text has been corrected and a new version of the statistical summary narrative has been produced. This correction will affect conclusions that would previously have been drawn from the workforce data in the initial release on 22 August. Conclusions and data for dental activity and other non-workforce data has not been affected.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
2019/20 to 2023/24 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 27 August 2024
We've identified that table 1f was omitted from the national summary tables. Table 1f covers data on courses of treatment by patient exemption type, treatment band, and financial year.
This table has been added into the national overview summary tables XLSX file and the file has been republished. All other data in the national overview summary tables, the geographical breakdown summary tables, and the workforce overview summary tables was unaffected.
There is no change to the key findings or the narrative text for this release.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
General Pharmaceutical Services – England
2015/16 to 2021/22 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 4 October 2023
It's been identified that an error was made in this release when gathering the data for the last 3 months of 2021/22. This has resulted in double counting for some advanced services for those months and inflated figures for this financial year 2021/22.
This has affected the charts and commentary in the Advanced Services section of the statistical summary narrative from figure 14 to figure 20, as well as the figures in accompanying summary tables for 2021/22.
Several services are affected. These include the total cost of:
- Discharge Medicines Service (DMS) (GBP)
- provision of Hepatitis C testing service and Test Kit reimbursement (GBP)
- set up and service fees of Hypertension service (GBP)
- Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) drugs (GBP)
- COVID-19 Test Kit set up fees, Test Kit fees and related costs (GPB)
- pharmacies providing COVID-19 vaccinations (GPB)
- pharmacies claiming COVID-19 premises and refrigeration costs (GPB)
Also affected are the total amount of:
- all Appliance Use Reviews (AURs) including home and premises
- fees received for CPCS (GBP)
- home deliveries and the total costs (GBP)
The costs in the summary tables were inflated by approximately 20% and the volume figures by just under 10% except from Hepatitis C testing and Hypertension services. As these services were introduced in 2021/22 they had higher volumes processed in the later part of the year, and these costs for these services were inflated by an average of over 70%.
The corrected figures can be found in the General Pharmaceutical Services – England 2015/16 to 2022/23 Annual summary statistics due for publication on 12 October 2023.
There is no change to the key findings of this release.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Medicines Used in Mental Health – England
2015/16 to 2023/24 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 12 July 2024
It's been identified that a category in figure 1 and figure 2 of the statistical summary narrative was incorrectly labelled. The 'Total' category for antidepressants in these 2 charts was labelled as 'Unknown' in the initial release. This has affected data labels for this category in the chart tab and the 'BNF Paragraph Name' column in the table tab and data downloads for figure 1 and figure 2. Chart data for the other antidepressant drug categories was not affected and the numerical data for the 'Total' categories remains the same. Data in the summary table excel files was not affected.
A narrative containing the corrected chart tab, table tab, and data downloads for figure 1 and figure 2 has been produced and can be found on the Medicines Used in Mental Health 2023/24 webpage.
There is no change to the key findings or the narrative text for section 2.1 Antidepressants in this release.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
2015/16 to 2022/23 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 15 September 2023
It's been identified that an error was made in this release when training the model of expected items based on pre-pandemic trends. The model was initially trained on the full data instead of only on data from April 2015 to February 2020. This has affected the charts and commentary in section 3 of the statistical summary narrative.
A narrative containing the corrected version of the affected charts and commentary has been produced and can be found in the resources list for this release.
There is no change to the key findings of this release, but the error in model training resulted in incorrect data in the info boxes, charts and commentary in section 3 only.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
2015/16 to 2021/22 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 2 August 2022
It's been identified that data has been assigned to the incorrect IMD Decile in the statistical summary tables of the latest release. This is due to an ordering error in code used to produce these statistics.
This affects Table 8: Indices of Deprivation (IMD) in each of the statistical summary tables found in the resources list for this release.
Corrected tables have been produced assigning Total Identified Patients, Total Items, and Total Net Ingredient Cost (GBP) to the correct IMD Decile.
There is no change to the key findings of this release and the correct data was used in the statistical narrative.
The mislabelling of this field would contradict the conclusions that would previously have been drawn using data from the statistical summary tables.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
2015/16 to 2019/20 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 10 December 2020
It has been identified that a column, Identified Patient Flag, was omitted from the statistical summary tables of the latest release.
This affects Table 4 - STP in each of the statistical summary tables found in the resources list for this release.
The tables have been reproduced to include the omitted column.
There is no change to the key findings of this release. The omission of this field would not contradict the conclusions that would previously have been drawn from the data.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
Prescription Cost Analysis – England
2022/23 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 27 July 2023
It has been identified that SNOMED codes have appeared incorrectly in the statistical summary tables of the latest release. This was caused by SNOMED codes being formatted as integers and not as a character field. The statistical analysis software used to produce this release has a known issue with being unable to represent very large integers. SNOMED codes corresponding to a number higher than the threshold were converted to a different number, making these codes incorrect.
This affects the SNOMED code tables in the national summary tables for both the 2022/23 financial year and 2022 calendar year found in the resources list for this release.
Corrected tables have been produced with SNOMED codes formatted as characters.
There is no change to the key findings of this release and the correct data was used in the statistical narrative.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
2022/23 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 10 July 2023
It has been identified that data has been assigned to the incorrect SNOMED code in the statistical summary tables of the latest release. This is due to products being assigned the pack level SNOMED code in March instead of the product level SNOMED code.
This affects the SNOMED codes tables in the national summary table for the 2022/23 financial year found in the resources list for this release.
Corrected tables have been produced assigning the product level SNOMED code.
There is no change to the key findings of this release and the correct data was used in the statistical narrative.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
2019 Annual summary statistics
Date of notice: 5 May 2020
It has been identified that a column, Standard Quantity Unit, was omitted from the presentation level tables of the latest release.
This affects Table 5 (Presentations) in the Prescription Cost Analysis 2019 – Statistical summary tables (Excel: 3.8MB), and the historical presentation level tables which are also added as yearly CSVs to our Open Data Portal.
This omission was caused by an oversight on our part during the transition of this publication from NHS Digital. The standard quantity unit is a field that is no longer available to us after our move to a single source of information for drugs reporting. This was discussed in the Background Information and Methodology note that accompanies this release. NHS Digital communicated this in their 2018 release but were able to carry out an exercise to make this column available.
We appreciate that we have not clearly communicated the removal of this field in our publication as a pre-announced change to the 2019 release when we should have done, along with the reasoning behind this and any impacts on the statistics.
Unfortunately, we are unable to amend the released data to include this field, as it is no longer held as an attribute within our reporting systems. A potential replacement for this field has been identified that is held within our systems. However, we cannot re-release this year’s publication with it included due to issues that it would create with disaggregation of historical data. It's anticipated that this field will be included in the PCA – England 2020 release.
There is no change to the key findings of this release, nor would the omission of this field contradict the conclusions that would previously have been drawn from the data.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
