If you’re a UK State Pensioner living in or moving to an EU country, you can apply online for an S1. For more information, visit our page on applying for healthcare cover for living abroad.
You might also be entitled to an S1 if you:
- work in an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein and pay National Insurance contributions to the UK
- get other types of exportable benefits and live in an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein
Posted workers
If you have been temporarily posted by a UK company to an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you may be entitled to have the UK pay for your healthcare cover in the country you’re posted to.
You’ll need to apply for a certificate of entitlement called an S1.
You can find out more and apply for an S1 through HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on GOV.UK
Exportable benefits other than a UK State Pension
The rules have changed, and you cannot apply for a new S1 for healthcare cover based on getting the following benefits anymore:
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Carer’s Allowance (CA)
- Attendance Allowance (AA)
You might still be able to get an S1 if you export your Maternity Allowance or certain bereavement benefits.
You can read more about exporting benefits on GOV.UK.
If you already have an S1
If you already have an S1 based on one of the exportable benefits listed on this page, you’ll still be covered for as long as you’re receiving that benefit.
If your S1 has a time limit
If your S1 has a time limit, you can still apply to renew it as long as you’re still receiving one of the exportable benefits.
