You may be able to claim between £100 and £3,000 to assist you with your studies if you meet all the following:
- you must be on a course leading to registration as a doctor or dentist
- you must be in genuine hardship and unable to manage any shortfall between your income and expenditure
- you must be eligible, and have applied, for a full NHS Bursary (tuition fees, non-means tested grant, and the means-tested bursary)
- you must have provided the relevant financial details to enable you to be assessed for the means-tested bursary, even if the final outcome was £0
- If you or your parents, spouse or partner have chosen not to provide financial information for the means-tested part of the bursary, and you are only in receipt of the £1,000 non-means tested grant, you will not be eligible to make a claim for the NHS Hardship Grant
How to apply for the NHS Hardship Grant
You should apply by email and provide:
- details and evidence of your daily income and expenses
- confirmation that you have applied for other available funding, such as student loans and university hardship funds
- confirmation from your university that they support your NHS Bursary Hardship Grant application
Evidence you can provide should include:
- bank statements for the last three months
- mortgage statement or tenancy agreement
- written confirmation from your university confirming you have made an application for their hardship fund (or similar)
Email your information nhshardshipgrant@nhsbsa.nhs.uk and use ‘NHS Medical and Dental Hardship application’ as your subject heading.
We will work out if there is a shortage between your income and expenses. If there is a shortfall, we will pay you based on this amount.
You will be contacted by email with the outcome within twenty working days from the date we receive your claim.
