Manage your NHS Bursary

It’s important to let us know straight away if your circumstances change as this could affect how much NHS Bursary you’re entitled to.

You can tell us about most changes using your NHS Bursary account. Contact us if you have any questions or problems.

Your university needs to send us a Withdrawal Form and confirm your last date of attendance. We'll then recalculate your NHS Bursary entitlement. If you’ve been underpaid any NHS Bursary after you’ve withdrawn or interrupted, we’ll pay you on the next available payment date. If you’ve been overpaid, we’ll contact you about repayment options.

Illness or injury

If you have a medically certified illness or injury and have an authorised absence from your course, you can still receive your NHS Bursary for up to 60 days in the academic year.

If you need more than 60 days of sick leave due to your illness or injury, we’ll suspend your NHS Bursary from the 61st day of your absence until you return.

Maternity and adoption

Maternity or adoption leave

You may be entitled to a maternity or adoption award for up to 12 months if your university authorises the absence.

The award usually includes the elements of your NHS Bursary you usually receive, except those that relate to attendance on your course. This includes:

You and your university need to discuss when the authorised absence should begin.

Maternity or adoption support

We’ll continue to pay your bursary for up to 4 weeks if you’re supporting a mother and child during and after childbirth or adoption. Your university needs to authorise this absence.
