If you’re in genuine financial hardship, you may be able to claim between £100 and £3,000 to assist you with your studies.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you need to:
- be on a course leading to registration as a doctor or dentist
- be in genuine financial hardship
- be unable to manage any shortfall between your income and expenses
- have exhausted all other funding available, such as university hardship loans
- be eligible and have applied for a full NHS Bursary, including:
- non means tested bursary
- means tested bursary
- tuition fee support
When you applied for the NHS Bursary, you must have given us financial details to be assessed for the means tested bursary, even if this was £0.
If you, your parents or your partner chose not to give us their financial information for the means tested bursary, and you only receive the non means tested grant, you’re not eligible for the NHS Hardship Grant.
How to apply
You need to email us at nhshardshipgrant@nhsbsa.nhs.uk using ‘NHS Medical and Dental Hardship application’ as your subject heading.
In your email, include:
- details and evidence of your daily income and expenses
- evidence that you’ve applied for other available funding, such as student loans and university hardship funds
- confirmation from your university that they support your NHS Bursary Hardship Grant application
Evidence could include:
- bank statements for the last three months
- a mortgage statement or tenancy agreement
- written confirmation from your university confirming you’ve made an application for their hardship fund or similar scheme
We’ll email you within 20 working days to let you know if your application was successful. If it was, we’ll work out if there is a shortfall between your income and expenses and we’ll pay you this amount as soon as possible.
