Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to more support through the NHS Bursary.
Dependants' Allowance
You’re eligible for Dependants' Allowance if you have anyone who is wholly or mainly financially dependent on you during your studies. You can apply for this when you make your NHS Bursary application.
The 2023 to 2024 rates are:
- up to £2,448 for a spouse, partner, civil partner or first child
- up to £549 for each additional child
Dependants' Allowance is means tested so we’ll use your dependants' income, where applicable, to calculate your entitlement.
If your partner is a full time student and receives grants or loans related to your dependants, you’ll only be entitled to 50% of the rates.
If your partner receives an NHS Bursary, you may both receive Dependants' Allowance at 50% of the rates. If one of you chooses not to receive it, the other can receive the full rate.
You can watch a short YouTube video about Dependants' Allowance.
Parent Learning Allowance (PLA)
If you have a dependent child or children, you may be entitled to PLA. We’ll check this automatically when you apply for the NHS Bursary.
The 2023 to 2024 rate is up to £1,204.
PLA is means tested, so we’ll use the income declared on your application to calculate your entitlement.
If your partner receives an NHS Bursary, you may both receive PLA at 50% of the rate. If one of you chooses not to receive it, the other can receive the full rate.
Childcare Allowance (CCA)
You’re eligible for CCA if you have dependent children under 15, or under 17 if they have special educational needs, and they’re attending registered childcare.
We can contribute a maximum of 85% of your childcare costs per week up to:
- £188.90 per week for one child
- £323.85 per week for two or more children
Visit our Childcare Allowance page for more information on eligibility and how to apply.
Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE)
If you pay for travel or temporary accommodation when you’re on a placement, you may be able to claim money back through TDAE.
Visit our Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses page for more information.
Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
You can apply for DSA if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long term effect on your ability to study. It could help towards costs you may pay as a direct result of your disability or pay for extra help to complete your course.
The maximum rate for 2023 to 2024 is £26,291. This could include support with:
- specialist equipment
- non-medical helper
- travel
- other disability related costs, such as printing
You can apply for DSA using your NHS Bursary account once you’ve applied for the NHS Bursary.
Visit our Disabled Students Allowance page for more information.
Extra Weeks Allowance
You could get Extra Weeks Allowance if your course lasts more than 30 weeks and 3 days in the academic year, not including holidays. We’ll assess this based on your term dates.
