If you require access to a specific set of Ophthalmic data this can be requested in different ways. This page details the options available and provides more information on the process involved in each.
Academic Research requests (patient identifiable data)
You can make a request for patient-identifiable dental data by using our Academic Research request process.
If you need any support with your enquiry, you can contact us at dataservicessupport@nhsbsa.nhs.uk. We can discuss your data access requirements and what data is currently available.
Making a request
- Discuss your research project with the NHS Health Research Authority.
- Apply to the relevant research ethics committee for approval (this approval must be supplied as part of your application).
- Read our data for research application form (Word: 311KB) and research board terms of reference (Word: 2.1MB).
- Complete the research application form (Word: 311KB) and email us at dataservicessupport@nhsbsa.nhs.uk to discuss your request. You need to include any relevant documents (for example, the ethical approval or your legal basis for requesting patient-identifiable data).
- Supply purchase order details by email to dataservicessupport@nhsbsa.nhs.uk
How we review your request
Our research board reviews all requests. They decide if it meets the requirements and if we can support it. We'll give you a reason if we're unable to support your request at the time of application.
Reviews usually take 6 to 8 weeks. It may take longer, depending on our resource availability and how complex the request is.
There will be a non-refundable charge for reviewing your request. If your request is approved, there'll be additional charges to cover the cost of processing and delivering the data.
Ad hoc data requests
If you want to submit a one-off request for data, complete our ad hoc data request form and email it to dataprotection@nhsbsa.nhs.uk and copy in dataservicessupport@nhsbsa.nhs.uk.

Make sure you allow plenty of time for your request to be processed, as this can take up to 6 weeks.
Your request will be assessed using our data policy, and may have to be revised. If your request is complex or time consuming, it could be declined. If our team are able to fulfil a large or complex request, we may charge you for this.
Public sector organisations can ask us about accessing the data we hold.
