NHS Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES)

The NHS Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES) is an NHS wide standard which enables NHS organisations to compare the workplace and career experiences of disabled and non-disabled staff.

NHS organisations use the metrics data to develop and publish an action plan. Year on year comparison enables us to show progress against the indicators of disability equality.

As an arm's length body, it is optional for the NHSBSA to take part in the WDES. The 2019 to 2020 WDES is the first year that we have taken part.

As part of the WDES, we have submitted data against specific WDES metrics and completed a report and action plan based on this data.

What is in our WDES report

Our report includes information about:

  • workforce demographics
  • recruitment and selection
  • colleague capability processes
  • discrimination, harassment and bullying cases
  • career progression and opportunities
  • workplace experiences
  • colleagues engagement
  • senior leadership demographics

Our report fulfils our reporting requirements for the WDES and includes our action plan based on the results from the metrics data.
