Who can access My NHS Pension

My NHS Pension is in the early stages of development, which means we're continuing to develop and add to the features currently available.

Registration to My NHS Pension is currently only available to selected users. We're continuing the roll-out of onboarding to My NHS Pension, and other members will be contacted once they're also able to register.

The NHS Pension Scheme member groups we are currently inviting to register are:

  • non-ESR active members
  • non-ESR deferred members
  • pensioners who claimed benefits since 2015, excluding child dependents
  • active members who have access to ESR (this group is being onboarded in stages by region).
  • active members in the following regions who have access to ESR (this group is being onboarded in stages by region):
    • Wales
    • East of England
    • South East
    • South West
    • North East and Yorkshire
    • North West
    • Midlands

Electronic Staff Record (ESR) users can still access their Total Reward Statement (TRS) using ESR.

If you are not in one of these member groups, we'll contact you once you’re also able to register for My NHS Pension.

Accessing My NHS Pension

If you've a received a letter or email from us inviting you to register for My NHS Pension with your unique codes, you can sign in to My NHS Pension.

Step 1: Unique codes

You can find your unique codes in your letter or email.

If copying and pasting your codes, please make sure all spaces are removed from the start or end.

Step 2: Additional Information requested when registering

You'll be asked to provide some information for security reasons.

Your member number can usually be found on your payslip listed as ‘SD ref’, or you can find it at the top of your current Total Rewards Statement (TRS) / Annual Benefit Statement (ABS), listed as 'member number'.

When inputting your member number to register for My NHS Pension, just include the 8-digit number, you do not need to add ‘SD’ at the start.

Your National Insurance number must not include any spaces.

If you need help finding your member number, contact nhsbsa.mynhspension@nhsbsa.nhs.uk.

Step 3: Username and password

Username

Make sure that your username is unique and memorable.

Password

The system is set up to make sure you use the strongest but easiest password to remember.

We suggest that you try using the ‘3 random words’ method as recommended by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Step 4: Which email address to use

We recommend that you use a personal non-work email address to register for My NHS Pension. This way, if you ever leave NHS employment, you'll still be able to access your account.

Step 5: Security questions

You're not able to include punctuation or special characters.

Step 6: Email verification

Once registration is completed, you'll be sent an email for verification.

Check all your folders, including junk, for an email from ‘mynhspensionnoreply@nhsbsa.nhs.uk’.

This email will include a link that will verify your account. The link will take you to My NHS Pension and a verification message will appear. Please ensure that this is completed as soon as possible to prevent any access issues.

If you've already clicked the link, an error message will appear.

If you're not sure if you've been verified, log in to My NHS Pension and if there is no reminder to verify your email then please contact us using the online form selecting My NHS Pension Support for any support.

Step 7: Two-factor authentication

Once registered, you'll be asked to log in.

You'll be asked to set up a two-factor authentication.

Follow the on-page actions to complete either authentication.

For both options, you'll be presented with recovery codes. We recommend you store these in a secure place. These codes will be required if you lose access to your phone or authentication device.

Some authenticators may ask you to authenticate CompendiaID instead of MyNHSPension.nhsbsa.nhs.uk, authenticate with CompendiaID if asked. Please make sure a CompendiaID option is showing in your authenticator app before continuing.

Nominations

Nominations will not show on your Annual Benefit Statement (ABS) under Current Retirement benefits in My NHS Pension, however you can view, edit or delete your nominations on the Nominations page. You can find this by clicking ‘More NHS information’ and ‘Nominations’.
