Getting an estimate of your pension

We’re currently receiving high volumes of retirement applications

It's taking us longer than usual to process payments of retirement benefits. We prioritise paying our members, so it may take us longer than usual to process requests for estimates and transfers.

You can check our current processing times on our website.

We provide active and deferred members with an Annual Benefit Statement (ABS). They’re also known as Total Reward Statements (TRS) and can be accessed via Electronic Staff Record (ESR).

You can watch our video for information about how to request an estimate of your NHS Pension:

What you get from our statements

The service is free of charge and is an efficient way to get information about your NHS pension.

Pension statements refresh yearly, based on information supplied by your employer up to 31 March.

Find out more on our Total Reward Statement information website.

Early retirement calculator

The early retirement calculator (Excel: 162KB) shows what to expect if you claim benefits earlier than normal pension age.

You’ll need to access your Annual Benefit Statement to use the calculator.

The calculator will not estimate 1995 Section benefits for members aged 50 to 55.

You can read the early retirement calculator guidance (PDF: 185KB) to help you.

Accessing your Annual Benefit Statement (ABS)

You can view your statement in different ways, depending on if you have access to Electronic Staff Record (ESR). If you're able to you should access your annual benefit statement via ESR.

Non-ESR users (previous access via Gov.UK Verify)

If you do not have access to ESR and are actively contributing to the NHS Pension Scheme, we will write to you by the end of August 2023 to provide you with your registration information for our new digital platform, My NHS Pension.

If you've accessed your statement in the last 12 months via Gov.UK Verify you should have already received a letter asking you to register for My NHS Pension.

If you've already been in touch to request a copy of your statement and you're a non-ESR user, we will be in touch soon to invite you to register for My NHS Pension.

If you need to access your statement sooner, you can contact us via:

Online: Use our 'Contact Us' form - select the service 'My NHS Pension'

If you do not have an Annual Benefit Statement (ABS)

Sometimes statements might not be available via the portal. If you’re an active member, your employer may be able to provide different types of an estimate. You should check with them first before contacting NHS Pensions.

You can request an estimate from us if:

  • your employer cannot provide you with an estimate
  • you’re a deferred member
  • you’re a Pension Credit member
  • you've taken partial retirement before 1 April 2023

How to request an estimate

There are different types of estimates.

View the request form before you request an estimate. It will help you understand the different types of estimate and which one is applicable for what you want.
